a little bit about

wales

We want to share with you a little bit of the knowledge we gleaned while in Wales.

location

Wales is a country located on the Southwest region on the island of Great Britain. In size, Wales is a bit bigger than Connecticut and a bit smaller than New Jersey. It takes about 4.5 hours to drive from the northern to the Southern coast and about 1.5 hours to drive from West to East in it’s very middle. If you don’t feel like road tripping, you can walk the country via its @walescoastpath which hugs the entire 870 mile coast line of the country. Wales is famous for its lush greenery, its rocky coastlines, its jagged mountain peaks, its rolling hills, and its patchwork farms.

landscape

If you like patterns, Wales is the place for you! Each of Wales mountains, hills, and valleys are polka dotted with white furry balls. That’s because there are three times as many sheep as people in Wales (approx. 9 million sheep). Wales takes the practice of grass-grazing animals to the next level. You cannot venture an eight of a mile within the country without seeing a grazing animal.

language

In Wales, they say “brelli” instead of umbrella, “Wellies” for Wellington boots, and “Croeso i Cymru” for “Welcome to Wales.” That last one isn't a dialect or accent, that’s a language. Welsh! Welsh is one of the oldest living languages in Europe! Our favorite welsh world is cwtch for cuddle and our favorite welsh sound is the “ll’ which is is used 5x in "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch," a large village on the island of Anglesey in Northern Wales which also holds the title for the 2nd longest place name in the world.

people

If you’d ask us to describe the stereotypical Welsh person, we’d say extremely kind, honest, proud, merry, quirky, hard working, family-oriented, sarcastic, and patriotic. For being a small country, Wales has produced some very influential people. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Calvin Coolidge were all of Welsh ancestry? Today, Wales is the birthplace of talented actors like Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Christian Bale. Incredible authors, like Ronald Dahl and C.S. Lewis and talented musicians like Tom Jones and Charlotte Church. I think that’s enough to chew on for now. Enjoy the films!!!
